Pendet Traditional Balinese Ritual Dance Performed During Temple Ceremony
Pendet is a traditional Balinese dance, in which the offer be made to purify the temple or theater as a prelude to ceremonies or other dances. Pendet is usually performed by young girls, who bowls of petals, which are cast handfuls in the air at different times in the dance. Pendet can be seen as a dance of greeting, to welcome the public and to invite spirits to a concert to enjoy.

Traditional Balinese dances are the oldest form of performing arts in Bali. Traditional dances can be divided into two kinds, sacred dance called Wali called Bebalihan dance and entertainment. Wali (sacred dance) is usually performed in a number of ritualistic ceremonies just because the strong magical powers and can only be performed by specific dancers. Bebalihan are usually conducted in the social events. Besides entertainment, Bebalihan has other purposes, such as greeting guests, celebrating the harvest, or gathering crowds. Bebalihan has more variations than Wali.
Pendet is the presentation of an offer in the form of a ritual dance. Unlike the exhibition dances that demand heavy training, Pendet can be danced by anyone. It is simply learned by imitation. Younger girls follow the movements of the older women, who recognize their responsibility in setting a good example. Proficiency comes with age. If a religious dance, Pendet is usually performed during temple ceremonies.
All dancers carry in their right hand a small offering of incense, cakes, water craft or flower formations. With these they dance from shrine to shrine in the temple. Pendet can be performed intermittently during the day and late into the night during temple festivals.
Pendet The original dance is performed by young girls 4.5 (before adolescence) in the temple yards. Pendet dancers bring flowers in small Bokor (silver bowls for holding flowers in one ceremony). They spread the flowers around the temple. This dance is a symbol of God’s hospitality in some ritual ceremonies in Bali. Pendet really simple dance movements. These movements are the basic dance movements of Balinese dance. Pendet has since undergone development with variations and is now not only performed in ritual ceremonies, but also in a number of social events. Pendet since been known as a welcoming dance.
